 How to Start Profitable Turkey Farming



Turkey farming is a viable alternate to chicken farming. In India, commercial turkey farming is increasingly popular .Mainly it depends on meat, eggs as well as growing as a pet.

Turkey will produce a lot of meat and it's very good business to earn a high profit. Compared to the broiler chickens and pig, they develop quickly and are ready for slaughter sooner. The weather conditions in India are very suitable for growing turkeys commercially .If we maintain good care and management, we can achieve success in turkey farming.

Breed Selection

There are 4 types of breeds available in commercial turkey farming. Turkeys can be produced as commercial meat in India. Some of the best breeds are Broad Breasted Bronze, Beltsville Small White - Egg production, Nandanam Turkey-1 variety is a cross between the black desi variety and the exotic Beltsville small white variety and Broad Breasted White are well suited for tamilnadu climatic condition.

Housing Requirement 

The floor space requirement for 0-4 weeks is 1.5 sq.ft. per bird. Approximately one can grow 300 turkey birds on 600sq.ft.We should not grow more birds in a limited space, it will cause birds to get damaged if we dump them in a limited space.[Also Read: Best Business Ideas - Seasonal Best Fruit Mangoes Business]

Disease

Turkey will be disease resistant birds but we need to deworm the birds regularly; proper feed and water will grow a healthy turkey. Round worms and fowl mites are the most frequent parasites seen in turkeys. Vaccination starts with New Castle Disease- B1 Strain. Next to that, on the 4th and 5th week, Fowl Pox vaccination is provided. Incubation:

There are two types of incubation methods. Natural brooding and artificial brooding.

Artificial Incubation:

Eggs are hatched with the help of incubators. Eggs should be turned at hourly intervals. In Turkey, the 0-4 week period is called as brooding period. However, in winter, the brooding period is extended up to 5-6 weeks. [Also Read: Best Business Idea - Milk Powder Trade]

Marketable Age:

Mostly, a male turkey is ready for meat at the age of 14 – 15 weeks and the female turkey takes 17-18 weeks. Approximately 4 – 5 Months.3 -5% would be the mortality ratio during the brooding period.

Profit:

We can start this business with 600sq.ft of space. We can grow turkeys in free-range farming method and a cage system. We can grow 300 birds on 600sq.ft. of average meat cost will be around 350rs per kg.We can get 10kg meat from a single bird if we done a proper feed management. So we can get 3500Rs income for a single bird.1000rs will be deducted for food, so the net profit is around 2500Rs/-


Marketing:
